Familiar foes met again, but this time, the stakes were higher.
The 34th-ranked Hope College women's tennis team entered the matchup in the Round of 32 of the Division III National Championships looking to avenge a regular-season loss to Gustavus Adolphus College (Minnesota) on Friday in Chicago, Illinois.Â
The MIAA-champion Flying Dutch ultimately fell, 4-1, to the No. 21 Gusties, ending the season with a 19-7 overall record.Â
Gustavus Adolphus established early control in doubles play, securing wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Hope's No. 3 tandem, Kaitlyn Stievater and Phoebe Walker, held a narrow 5-3 advantage before their match was left unfinished.
In singles action, sophomore Hadley Krygier (White Lake, Michigan / Walled Lake Northern HS) delivered a standout performance for Hope at No. 2 singles, winning 6-4, 6-3.
Junior Amanda Lopykinski (Lemont, Illinois / Lemont Township) battled deep into the third set at No. 1 singles before her match was called. At No. 6 singles, freshman Kaitlyn Stievater (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan / Wylie E. Groves) showcased resilience, splitting sets before play was halted in that match as well.Â
