The Hope College men's golf team shot a 12-over 300 at The Medalist Golf Club in Marshall on Thursday during the season's second jamboree, finishing second at the eight-team event.
The Flying Dutchmen moved within two strokes of the season lead with a 36-hole total of 603. Calvin University, Thursday's winner, and Trine University share first place at 601.
The team with the lowest cumulative score over 108 holes of play this fall and spring will earn the MIAA championship. Hope holds a 25-stroke advantage over fourth-place Albion College.
Hope's next round is Saturday, Oct. 4, at 10 a.m. at Pine River Country Club in Alma.
On Thursday, sophomore
Will Thomas (Portage, Michigan / Portage Central) led the Flying Dutchmen with a 1-over 73 that included two birdies and 13 pars. He finished in a five-way tie for third place, two strokes behind co-medalists Charlie Dierkes of Albion and Ford Erickson of Calvin.
Senior
Klay Redman (Dublin, Ohio / Dublin Coffman) carded a 75, while seniors
Liam Casey (Northville, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) and
Patrick Michael (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) each shot 76.
Freshman
Kody Vis (Spring Lake, Michigan / Spring Lake) added a 79, and junior
Hank Roebuck (Ann Arbor, Michigan / Skyline) shot an 80.
Hope finished three strokes behind Calvin on Thursday and one ahead of Trine.
