Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Alan Babbitt

No. 9 Women's Basketball Downs Albion, Returns to 24th MIAA Tournament Title Game

The Hope College women's basketball team relished a timely halftime break during Friday's MIAA Tournament semifinal against Albion College.

Refreshed and refocused, the ninth-ranked Flying Dutch reasserted control during the first 2 1/2 minutes of the third quarter and marched to a 73-58 victory in Angola, Indiana.

Hope (23-3) advanced to the 24th MIAA Tournament championship game in program history and its first since 2024. On Saturday, Feb. 28, at 7:30 p.m., the Flying Dutch will face top-seeded Trine Thunder, a 69-57 winner against Calvin Knights in Friday's second semifinal.

"Right now, you're just trying to get into the national tournament. You want to earn your way in with a win," head coach Brian Morehouse said. "The good thing is we played the first game and we're driving home right now. We are going to get to our beds and enjoy a good night of sleep."

Hope earned the opportunity to relax for the night, leading from start to finish.

An Albion 9-0 run to end the first half cut the Flying Dutch's lead to 32-27 at halftime. The Britons hoped to repeat the effort that led to an overtime victory in the first meeting Jan. 28 at Albion.

Hope emphatically answered the challenge, producing an 11-2 run that pushed its lead back into double digits at 43-29. The Britons (19-8) never got closer than eight points.

"I thought the start of the second half, we settled down a little bit defensively and came out and just got stops and scores," Morehouse said. "It helped that we knocked down a couple of shots real quick coming out of the second half. That also just lowers your stress level."

Senior forward Sydney Vis (Byron Center, Michigan/South Christian) scored five of her game-high 18 points during the decisive second-half run, making a layup and sinking a 3-pointer.

Vis is now three points from becoming the 17th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.

Three more teammates reached double figures.

All-MIAA sophomore guard Anna Richards (DeWitt, Michigan/Lansing Catholic) chipped in 16 points and three assists.

Her sister, All-MIAA sophomore forward Leah Richards (DeWitt, Michigan/Lansing Catholic), recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

All-MIAA sophomore forward Maddie Petroelje (Hudsonville, Michigan/Hudsonville) added 10 points.

MIAA MVP Meghan Trewhella led Albion with 16 points.
