Baseball Rallies in Nightcap, Takes Series at Otterbein

The Hope College baseball team captured its first series of the season dramatically Saturday at Otterbein University, rallying from an early six-run deficit to win the second game of a doubleheader, 12-10.

The Flying Dutchmen claimed the three-game set after winning Friday's opener, 18-6, at Jennings Park in Lewis Center, Ohio. Otterbein edged Hope, 4-3, in Saturday's first game.

The Orange and Blue evened their record at 3-3.

Hope trailed 8-2 after three innings in Game 2 after Otterbein answered the Flying Dutchmen's two-run first inning with seven runs in its first at-bat.

Despite a two-run homer from sophomore right fielder Brenden Collins (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Hackett Catholic), Hope still trailed, 9-4, heading into the sixth inning.

Back-to-back homers from senior designated hitter Charlie Saul (Batavia, Illinois / Batavia) and Collins cut the deficit to 9-6.

The Flying Dutchmen batted around and erupted for six runs in the seventh, beginning with a two-run homer from sophomore left fielder Corbin Bennetts (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison) following a leadoff walk to freshman third baseman Luke Anderson (Richland, Michigan / Gull Lake).

One batter later, sophomore shortstop Colton Kinnie (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan / Birmingham Seaholm) smacked a one-out RBI double. Saul then laced an RBI double for a 10-9 Hope lead.

Collins knocked in Saul with an RBI single and later scored after a failed pickoff attempt advanced him to third and a groundout from senior center fielder Jace DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) brought him home.

Bennetts, Collins and Saul collected three hits apiece.

Reliever Collin Genuise (Allendale, Michigan / Allendale) earned his first win of the season after allowing one run in 1 1/3 innings of work.

Reliever Steve Jorgens (Macomb, Michigan / Dwight D. Eisenhower) picked up the save, firing two scoreless innings and retiring six of the seven batters he faced.

In Game 1, Kinnie and Collins both homered for the Flying Dutchmen.

A two-run blast from Collins in the seventh inning tied the score at 3-3 before J.T. Gels delivered a walk-off bunt single for Otterbein.

Hope (3-3) returns to action Thursday, March 5, at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader against Wentworth Institute of Technology in Citrus Ridge, Florida.
