Baseball Wallops Lawrence, Edges Central College at Augustana

The Hope College baseball team powered its way to a pair of non-league victories at Augustana College on Friday, outslugging Lawrence University, 19-10, and edging Central College, 5-4, on a walk-off single.

The Flying Dutchmen raised their record to 6-8.


Against Central, sophomore left fielder Corbin Bennetts (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison) knocked in Jace DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) with the winning run on a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth.


DeMann reached base on an error to lead off the innings, then moved to third after a groundout to third from Jacob Walther and a groundout to first from Cade Seabaugh (Ballwin, Missouri / Ladue Horton).


Hope grabbed a 3-1 lead on a three-run rally in the second capped by a Seabaugh RBI double.


DeMann answered Central's run in the top of the fourth with his second homer of the season during the Flying Dutchmen's at-bat, extending the lead to 4-2.

Central pulled even with a two-run seventh.

Reliever Avery McEwen (Ann Arbor, MIchignan / Pioneer) closed the door on Central, tossing 2 ? innings of scoreless, one-hit relief. The right-hander struck out nine and walked one.


Against Lawrence, Hope never trailed after erupting for a nine-run top of the first.


Second baseman Granden Kinnie (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan / Birmingham Seaholm) started the rally by blasting a three-run homer, his second homer of the season.

Seabaugh and Bennetts followed with RBI singles. 

Shortstop Colton Kinnie (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan / Birmingham Seaholm) smacked a two-run double.


Batting for a second time in the inning, Granden Kinnie delivered an RBI single for a 9-0 lead and finished the game 3-for-5 with five RBIs.


Bennetts and Colton Kinnie collected four hits apiece. Granden Kinnie and designated hitter Charlie Saul (Batavia, Illinois / Batavia) had three hits apiece.


Reliever Josiah Long (Newaygo, Michigan / Newaygo) earned the win, scattering seven hits and three runs over four innings.


Reliever Ian Sanders (Grandville, Michigan / Grandville) fired three innings of scoreless relief. The right-hander struck out five while yielding one hit and one walk.


Hope concludes its weekend on Saturday, March 14, at 10 a.m. Central against Lawrence.
