Softball Tops Ohio Wesleyan and Wittenberg, Goes 4-0 at Ohio Northern Invite

The Hope College softball team completed a perfect run through the Ohio Northern Invitational, winning twice on Saturday and going 4-0 for the two-day tournament.

The Flying Dutch edged Ohio Wesleyan University, 7-5, in the morning matinee, then topped Wittenberg University, 5-1.

Hope, which swept Ohio Northern on Friday by scores of 10-3 and 9-4, is now a season-high four games over .500 at 9-5.

Against Ohio Wesleyan, a three-run rally by the Flying Dutch in the bottom of the sixth tied the score at 5-5.
Freshman right fielder Emily Brown (Grass Lake, Michigan / Grass Lake) smacked a two-out triple, then scored on a double by second baseman Jalen Fossitt (Onondaga, Michigan / Leslie). Fossitt scored one batter later after a throwing error on a Kenadee Schnik grounder.

Junior reliever Hailey Mellec (Commerce Township, Michigan / Walled Lake Northern) retired three of the four batters she faced in the seventh, preserving the victory for senior starter Gianna Kerschbaum (Baroda, Michigan / Stevensville-Lakeshore).

It was Mellec's first save of the season. Kerschbaum (5-0) scattered nine hits over six innings, striking out eight and walking two.

Fossitt went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, including an RBI double in the fourth and a run-scoring single to cap a four-run fifth.

Senior left fielder Kate DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) blasted a leadoff homer to start a fifth-inning rally. It was DeMann's first homer of the season.

Junior third baseman Terin Maynard (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison) followed with a triple and scored on a two-out single from sophomore shortstop Becca Tuttle (Grand Rapids, Michigan / West Catholic). Junior catcher Macy Verbeek (Grandville, Michigan / Calvin Christian) hit an RBI double and later scored on Fossitt's single.

Against Wittenberg, Mellec (4-5) scattered five hits and one earned run over seven innings. The left-hander struck out six and walked one.

The Flying Dutch produced all of their offense during the bottom of the third, taking advantage of three errors for five unearned runs.

DeMann and freshman first baseman Kaylin Reifschneider (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) scored on the same play to snap a scoreless tie after a Wittenberg throwing error. Two batters later, Maynard later scored a delayed steal.

Tuttle singled to drive in Kerschbaum and later scored on a passed ball.

Hope is scheduled to return to action Friday, March 27, at 3 p.m. Central time with a doubleheader at Greenville University.
