Baseball Erupts for 22 Runs, Splits Doubleheader with Olivet

The Hope College baseball team responded decisively to an extra-inning loss on Saturday.

The Flying Dutchmen nearly batted around twice during their first inning in Game 2 of a doubleheader against The University of Olivet, scoring 13 runs to set up a 22-1 victory.

Hope bounced back after dropping the first game at Boeve Stadium, 8-6, in 12 innings and avoided a sweep of the three-game series. The Comets also took Friday's first opener, 6-4, at Olivet.

The 22 runs were a season-high for the Flying Dutchmen.

Hope (7-14, 1-2 MIAA) sent 17 batters to the plate against two Olivet pitchers during the first inning. Nine hits fueled the rally, including a two-run double from sophomore third baseman Colton Kinnie (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan / Birmingham Seaholm) and a two-run single from senior right fielder Brenden Collins (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Hackett Catholic).

Freshman shortstop Anthony Devito (Lithia, Florida / Newsome) led Hope's 18-hit attack by going 4-for-5 with seven RBIs, including his first home run of the season — a two-run blast that started a seven-run third. Devito was the first Hope batter with at least six RBIs since Evan Maday in 2021 at Alma College.

Colton Kinnie, second baseman Granden Kinnie (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan / Birmingham Seaholm), and sophomore designated hitter Nick Verduzco (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Hackett Catholic) recorded two hits apiece.

Reliever Noah Bonnema (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) earned the victory after firing three innings of scoreless relief in the scheduled seven-inning game. The right-hander struck out two and walked one.

In Game 1, Olivet won on EJ Suggitt's two-run single in the top of the 12th.

Hope trailed, 6-1, after the fourth inning but rallied to force extra innings behind two runs apiece in the sixth and seventh and one in the ninth. Colton Kinnie's two-run homer — his fourth home run of the season — cut the Comets' lead to 6-5 in the seventh.

Senior centerfielder Jace DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) tied the score at 6-6 with a two-out single in the ninth, but the Flying Dutchmen stranded pinch-runner Carter Perry (Grand Rapids, Michigan / West Catholic) at second.

Hope left the bases loaded in the 10th and hit into an inning-ending double play in the 12th with runners at first and third.

Reliever Noah Reeves (Saline, Michigan / Saline) took the loss despite striking out 11 over 6.1 innings. The left-hander allowed two runs, both in the 12th. Reeves (0-5) was the ninth Hope pitcher to strike out 11 in an appearance since 2003, when computer stats started being kept.

Hope's next game is Tuesday, March 31, at 4 p.m. at Alma College.
