Patrick Michael Tied for First-Round Lead at Men's Golf's Bob Ebels Invitational

Hope College men's golfer Patrick Michael fired a 1-over-par 72 at The Meadows at Grand Valley State University on Friday and claimed a share of the first-round lead at the Flying Dutchmen's Bob Ebels Invitational.

Michael is tied with three golfers for the individual lead. The final round is scheduled to tee off on Saturday, April 11, at 10 a.m.

Hope shot an opening-round 305 and sits in sixth place after 18 holes at the 11-team event. Trine leads after posting a 295.

Freshman Joey Blondia of Richland, Mich. (Gull Lake), fired a 75 for the Flying Dutchmen.

Hope also received a 77 from freshman Eli Voisard of Tipp City, Ohio (Tippecanoe) and 79s from seniors Liam Casey of Northville, Mich. (Detroit Catholic Central) and Klay Redman of Dublin, Ohio (Dublin Coffman).

The tournament honors one of Hope's most successful men's golf coaches, who guided the Flying Dutchmen to 10 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship appearances during his tenure. Hope finished in the Top 10 twice at nationals: sixth in 2017 and ninth in 2009. Ebels coached a national champion in Josh Gibson (2017); three All-Americans in Josh Gibson (2017), Steven Strock (2010), and Tommy Yamaoka (2007); a national freshman of the year in Eric Wohlfield (1999); a national all-freshman team member in Winton Munch (2013), and 12 Academic All-Americans. Ebels also developed the Flying Dutchmen into an MIAA powerhouse. Fourteen of Hope's 20 MIAA titles have been earned under his leadership. The Flying Dutchmen posted five consecutive titles twice.
