A tale of two games unfolded for the Hope College softball team's home opener on Saturday against Trine University. The Thunder took game one, 8-1, before the Flying Dutch pushed the NFCA No. 2 ranked team to the edge before losing, 2-1.
Hope moved to 19–7 overall and 2–2 in MIAA play, while Trine stood at 19–1 overall (4-0 MIAA). The losses snapped the Flying Dutch's 14-game winning streak, the third-longest in program history.
The nightcap carried the weight of a postseason showdown.
Hope opened the scoring when junior Terin Maynard (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Jenison HS) reached base on an error and later crossed the plate on a throwing error, a jolt of momentum that briefly put the Flying Dutch in front of the defending national champions. Trine chipped back with single runs in the second to tie the game and in the fourth to take the lead, but never broke free.
Senior Gianna Kerschbaum's command and Hope's clean defense kept the game taut. As the final inning arrived, the margin remained razor-thin. Hope stayed within a breath of a statement win before Trine escaped with a 2–1 decision.
Leadoff hitter senior Kate DeMann delivered two of Hope's three hits in game one. Sophomore Sophie Stironek (Lake Orion, Michigan / Lake Orion) added the third hit and anchored the defense with seven clean putouts behind the plate. In the circle, Kerschbaum (Baroda, Michigan / Stevenville-Lakeshore) threw a complete game with just three hits allowed and six strikeouts.
The opener saw Trine's offense find its rhythm early, scoring in four innings and using a decisive four-run sixth to break open what had been a manageable 4–1 margin.
Hope manufactured its lone run in the sixth, capitalizing on a Trine miscue, but the Thunder's combination of timely hitting and efficient pitching held firm throughout.
Hope's four hits came from four different players—DeMann, Stironek, freshman Emily Brown (Grass Lake, Michigan / Grass Lake), and sophomore Jalen Fossitt (Onondaga, Michigan / Leslie).
Junior Hailey Mellec (Commerce Township, Michigan / Walled Lake Northern) struck out nine across five innings, allowing only two earned runs before Trine's sixth-inning surge.
Hope returns to the field on Wednesday, April 15, at 3 p.m. for a home doubleheader against Kalamazoo College.
