Cade Seabaugh's Seven-RBI Game Helps Baseball Win Series vs. Albion

Senior first baseman Cade Seabaugh homered twice and collected 10 RBIs, including a career-best seven in one game, to power the Hope College baseball team to a split against Albion College on Saturday and a win of the weekend series.

The Flying Dutchmen won two-of-three games, taking the opener, 8-4, on Friday and the doubleheader opener on Saturday, 14-6. The Britons avoided a sweep, edging Hope, 10-9, in Game 2 on Saturday.

Seabaugh (Ballwin, Mo. / Ladue Horton) joined freshman shortstop Anthony Devito (Lithia, Florida / Newsome) with seven-RBI games after a 4-for-5 performance in Game 1 that included a three-run homer, a two-run single and two RBI singles.

The last time Hope recorded two seven-RBI games in the same season was 2022 when Kyle Blackport accomplished it against both Plymouth State and the University of Chicago.

Saubaugh, who also slugged a game-tying, three-run homer in the eighth inning in Game 2, now has four home runs on the season.

The Flying Dutchmen overcame 2-0 run deficit after Albion's first at-bat, breaking the game open with a four-run third and a four-run sixth.

Devito and senior designated hitter Charlie Saul (Batavia, Ill. / Batavia) each contributed three hits, three runs scored and one RBI.

Winning pitcher Avery McEwen (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) scattered nine hits and six runs over 5.2 innings. Freshman reliever Roman Bovelsky (Lithia, Fla. / Newsome), Hope's third pitcher, posted his first save by firing 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.

In Game 2, Hope grabbed a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first after an RBI double from sophomore third baseman Nick Verduzco (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Hackett Catholic) and a two-run single from senior center fielder Jace DeMann (Byron Center, Mich. / South Christian).

Albion (16-13, 4-7 MIAA) rallied by scoring at least one run in every innings between the third and the fourth, capitalizing on 11 walks issued by Flying Dutchmen pitchers.

Hope kept battling, finally pulling even at 9-9 on Seabaugh's homer with nobody out that plated sophomore catcher Thatcher Simon (Byron Center, Mich. / Byron Center) and sophomore left fielder Corbin Bennetts (Jenison, Mich. / Jenison).

Albion, however, received a leadoff double from Logan DeVos in the ninth. Three batters later, second baseman Jonjay Arreazola knocked in pinch-runner Tyler Bronczyk with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly. Reliever Tyler Murphy then retired Hope in order to end the game.

Hope (9-21, 3-8 MIAA) next plays on Tuesday, April 14, at 4 p.m. at Alma College to complete a three-game series.
