Baseball Fires Shutout, Settles for Split against Calvin

Pitchers Noah Reeves and Josiah Long combined for a three-hit shutout for the Hope College baseball team in a 2-0 victory at Calvin University on Saturday, helping the Flying Dutchmen split the doubleheader.

The Flying Dutchmen came within an inning of a sweep, but Calvrin rallied with a five-run ninth for a 6-5 victory in Game 2.

Reeves (Saline, Michigan / Saline) started Game 1 and blanked Calvin on two hits. The freshman left-hander struck out nine — his second-highest total of the season — and walked three.

Long (Newaygo, Michigan / Newaygo) fired three scoreless innings for his second save, allowing one hit while the sophomore right-hander faced the minimum nine batters.

Hope grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fifth when sophomore second baseman Colton Kinnie (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan / Birmingham Seaholm) smacked an RBI single that scored sophomore left fielder Corbin Bennetts (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison). Kinnie went 3-for-4 as the Flying Dutchmen finished with 11 hits.

In the ninth, freshman outfielder Joe Rusin (Macomb, Michigan / Dakota) led off with a double. Pinch-runner Carter Perry (Grand Rapids, Michigan / West Catholic) moved to a third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch.

The Flying Dutchmen jumped to a 5-0 lead, starting with a three-run third that featured RBI singles from senior designated hitter Charlie Saul (Batavia, Illinois / Batavia) and freshman shortstop Anthony Devito (Lithia, Florida / Newcome) and a sacrifice fly from Kinnie.

Saul drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk in the fourth for Hope's fourth run, but the Flying Dutchmen left the bases loaded. In the fifth, sophomore third baseman Nick Verduczo (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Hackett Catholic) added a RBI single.

Calvin (15-22, 6-12 MIAA) added a run in the sixth off starter Avery McEwen (Ann Arbor, Michigan / Pioneer). The sophomore right-hander scattered eight strikeouts and six hits over eight innings on the mound.

The Knights erupted for a game-inning rally, sending eight batters to the plate against three Hope relievers. Calvin scored five times on three hits, one Flying Dutchmen throwing errors, two hit batters with the bases loaded and one walk with the bases loaded.

Hope (12-27, 6-12 MIAA) plays its final MIAA series of the season against Adrian College on Friday-Saturday, May 1-2. The Flying Dutchmen will play a doubleheader at Adrian on Friday at 2 p.m., then host a single game for Senior Day on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Boeve Stadium.
