Three Selected as MIAA Athletes of the Week

Three Hope College standouts have been chosen as MIAA Athletes of the Week: senior Brendan O'Donnell, junior Hailey Mellec in softball, and freshman Sophia Grzesiak in women's tennis.

O'Donnell is the MIAA Men's Lacrosse Defensive Athlete of the Week for the first time. The senior defender from Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake), helped the Flying Dutchmen post a 23-9 victory at Adrian College on Wednesday that clinched a third consecutive outright MIAA regular-season championship. The exercise science major also scooped up three ground balls.

Mellec is the MIAA Softball Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season and her career. The junior left-hander fired back-to-back, three-hit shutouts for the Flying Dutch at Albion College on Thursday and against Adrian College on Saturday at home at Wolters Stadium. The business major recorded 18 strikeouts and six walks.

Grzesiak is the MIAA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week for the first time. The freshman from Beverly Hills, Michigan (Detroit Country Day) went 6-0 last week, winning last week three times at No. 1 doubles, twice at No. 3 singles, and once at No. 4 singles at Adrian College on April 20 and at home against Albion College on Wednesday and Saint Mary's College on Saturday. The Flying Dutchmen served a three-peat of outright MIAA regular-season titles with the victories.
