Softball Splits Doubleheader at Alma, Turns Focus to MIAA Tournament

The Hope College softball team rebounded to split a doubleheader at Alma College on Saturday in the regular-season finale.

The Flying Dutch won the second game, 4-2, after losing the first game, 13-5, in six innings.

Hope (27-11 overall) heads into the MIAA Tournament as a fourth seed after completing league play with a 10-6 league record. The four-team field will be announced after Trine University and Kalamazoo College complete their doubleheader on Sunday, May 3.

During the nightcap, Hope jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. A blast to right field from pitcher Gianna Kerschbaum of Baroda, Michigan (Stevensville-Lakeshore) knocked in freshman left fielder Emily Brown of Grass Lake, Michigan (Grass Lake) and senior center fielder Kate Mann of Byron Center, Michigan (South Christian).

The next batter, sophomore first baseman Jalen Fossitt of Onondaga, Michigan (Leslie) then singled home junior catcher Sophie Stironek of Lake Orion, Michigan (Lake Orion).

Kerschbaum went the distance, improving to 14-4 after striking out nine and yielding five hits, including a two-run homer to Julia Duncan.

Stironek added an insurance run with an RBI double in the sixth that plated Brown.

In the opener, Alma (25-11, 11-5 MIAA) clinched a run-rule victory by scoring 10 runs on nine hits in the bottom of the sixth.

Stironek went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI on a fourth-inning single that brought home DeMann. Stironek scored in the second on a Fossitt RBI single.

The Flying Dutch snapped a 3-3 tie with a two-run sixth. Pinch-hitter Abby Whorton of Watervliet, Michigan (Watervliet) delivered a two-run single that scored Stironek and junior second baseman Macy Verbeek of Grandville, Michigan (Calvin Christian).
