Men’s Swim/Dive Finishes Runner-Up in Three Events at Be Better; Invite

Opening the 2026-27 season, the Hope College men's swimming and diving team jumped into the pool at the annual Be Better; Invite, hosted by the University of Michigan, and clocked three runner-up performances.

The three-team, non-scoring invite, which included Calvin University, honors the life and legacy of the late Ian Miskelley, a former University of Michigan and Holland Christian High School swimmer who passed away in 2020, promoting mental health awareness and supporting the Be Better; Foundation, a charitable organization created by the Miskelley family in Ian's memory.

Senior Christian Hoeksema (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) finished second in the 50-yard freestyle, posting a time of 21.67 seconds. Michigan's Antoine Destang took first at :21.15.

In the 100 butterfly, junior Everett Cox (Sugar Land, Texas (Logos Prep) placed runner-up after a swim of 51.33. Michigan's Boldizsar Magda won in :51.02.

In the 400 freestyle relay, Hope's Josh Bordovsky (Herndon, Virginia / South Lakes), Cox, senior Graham Eisenmann (Ozark, Missouri / Ozark) and junior Blake Hetherington (Jackson, Michigan / Lumen Christi) posted a second-place time of 306.72. Michigan was first at 3:05.75.

Bordovsky also swam the fastest Division III team of the meet in the 100 individual medley, a third-place 51.78. Michigan's Jaeddan Gamilla topped the field at 50.55.

The Flying Dutch also took third in two relays:

The mixed 200 medley relay. Sophomore John Szuba (Farmington Hills, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central), senior Dillon Horsley, senior Nick Suranyi (Novi, Michigan / Novi) and freshman Annie Lock clocked a time of 1:45.66.
The mixed 200 free relay: sophomore Nolan Smith (Buffalo Grove, Illinois / Buffalo Grove), Szuba, sophomore Gracie Putnam and sophomore Brianna Elliott went 1:35.73.

Hope's next meet is the Grand Valley State University Invitational on Friday-Saturday, Oct. 9-10 at the Holland Aquatic Center.
