Women’s Swim/Dive Places Third in Two Events at Be Better; Invite

Junior Emme D'Errico and freshman Callie Marks each swam third-place efforts to lead the Hope College women's swimming and diving team on Friday while competing at the Be Better; Invite hosted by the University of Michigan.

The three-team, non-scoring invite, which included Calvin University, honors the life and legacy of the late Ian Miskelley, a former University of Michigan and Holland Christian High School swimmer who passed away in 2020, promoting mental health awareness and supporting the Be Better; Foundation, a charitable organization created by the Miskelley family in Ian's memory.

D'Errico (Farmington Hills, Michigan / Farmington) finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke, posting a time of 59.81 seconds. Michigan's Anna Boemer won in 55.68.

In the 500 freestyle, Marks (Boulder, Colorado / Fairview) recorded a third-place swim of 5:10.10. Michigan's Marian Ploeger took first at 4:56.86.

The Flying Dutch also placed third in two relays:

The mixed 200 medley relay. Sophomore John Szuba (Farmington Hills, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central), senior Dillon Horsley (Indianaplolis, Indiana / North Central), senior Nick Suranyi (Novi, Michigan / Novi) and Lock clocked 1:45.66.
The mixed 200 free relay: sophomore Nolan Smith (Buffalo Grove, Illinois / Buffalo Grove), Szuba, sophomore Gracie Putnam, and sophomore Brianna Elliott went 1:35.73.

Freshman Layla Umstead (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison) clocked a fourth-place 50 free of 24.93. Freshman Annie Lock (Libertyville, Illinois / Libertyville) was fifth at 25.01.

Umstead also posted a fifth-place 200 free of 1:58.33.

In the 100 individual medley, D'Errico placed fifth at 1:02.24.
