Review
Hope won the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA)
Commissioner's Cup for the best cumulative performance in the
league's 18 sports for men and women. Hope finished 12th among 419
NCAA Division III colleges in the NACDA Directors' Cup standings,
Hope's best finish in the national ranking.
- Hope captured seven MIAA titles -- men's and women's soccer,
men's golf, volleyball, women's basketball, baseball and
softball.
- The basketball teams marked their first season at the college's
new DeVos Fieldhouse. The teams had a cumulative 32-0 record on
their new home court and each topped all Division III teams in
average home attendance.
- Hope qualified individual athletes or teams in 12 NCAA
championships -- men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross
country, men's and women's basketball, men's golf, softball, men's
and women's swimming, and men's and women's track.
- The women's basketball team won the NCAA Division III national
championship for the second time in school history. Coach Brian
Morehouse was named the Division III national coach of the year and
Bria Ebels was chosen the most valuable player at the Final
Four.
- Six Hope athletes were voted the MIAA's most valuable player --
Bria Ebels, women's basketball; Geoff Meyer, men's soccer; Jessica
Regnerus, offensive softball; Becky Whitman, defensive softball;
Kurtis Blohm, men's swimming; and Anneliese Fox, women's
tennis.
- Fifty-nine players were voted to All-MIAA first teams and a
record 172 were named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. Eight teams
received the MIAA All-Academic Team award for maintaining a
cumulative grade point average of at least 3.3 during the school
year. Honored were women's cross country, women's soccer, women's
track & field, women's swimming & diving, women's golf,
men's tennis, men's golf and softball.
- Eighteen athletes achieved NCAA All-America status at the
Division III national championships. Nine came in swimming -- Laura
Ansilio, Kurtis Blohm, Lisa Ekdom, Trisha Meier, Brittaney Reest,
Lisa Smith, Chas Vanderbroek, Ryan Vogelzang and Jeff Vroegindewey.
Also honored were Greg Immink and Bria Ebels, basketball; Ed
Huebner, Geoff Meyer and Devin McNeil, soccer; Kylee Brouwer,
softball; Lindsay Lange, Ryan TerLouw and Jennifer VanderMeer,
track and field.
- Voted Hope's outstanduing senior student-athletes were Kurtis
Blohm (swimming) and Bria Ebels (basketball).
- The MIAA sportsmanship award in men's tennis was presented to
senior Andy Ruemenapp.
- Several coaches and staff received honors. Richard Ray was
elected to the Hall of Fame of the National Athletic Trainers'
Association, the highest honor in the athletic training profession.
Ray Smith, director of men's athletics, was honored by his
California hometown when he was inducted into the Riverside Sport
Hall of Fame. Becky Schmidt was honored as the MIAA volleyball
coach of the year for guiding the Flying Dutch to a 16-0 record
while Karla Wolters and her staff were honored in softball for
their league championship season.
