- For the 12th consecutive year, Hope won the Michigan
Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Commissioner's Cup for
the best cumulative performance in the league's 18 sports for men
and women. Hope won six MIAA championships -- men's golf, men's
basketball, women's cross country, women's tennis, and men's and
women's track field.
- Hope qualified individuals or teams for 11 NCAA championships
-- men's soccer, men's and women's cross country, men's golf,
volleyball, men's basketball, men's and women's swimming &
diving, women's tennis, men's and women's track & field.
- Hope ranked 43rd among the 318 NCAA Division III colleges in
the Learfield Cup national standings compiled by the National
Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). NCAA
Division III consisted of 442 institutions in 2011-12.
- Five athletes were voted the MIAA's most valuable player --
Logan Neil, soccer; David Krombeen, basketball; Libby Westrate,
swimming, Adam Clements, baseball (pitcher), Kyle Vanderveen, track
and Liz Ellis, basketball (defensive). Honored by the MIAA for
sportsmanship were Andy Thomson (golf) and Bobby Cawood (tennis).
Named newcomers of the year by MIAA coaches were Tarwo Konbloe
(soccer and Jenna Grasmeyer (volleyball).
- Forty-four athletes were voted to the All-MIAA first teams and
an additional 34 received All-MIAA second team recognition. The
MIAA Academic Honor Roll included 199 Hope student-athletes,
including 21 for a fourth consecutive year. Eleven teams received
the MIAA All-Academic Team GPA award. The women's cross country
team received the honor for a 14th consecutive year. Other teams
honored included volleyball, women's and men's swimming &
diving, women's golf, men's and women's tennis, women's basketball,
women's soccer, women's track & field, and men's golf.
- Three athletes achieved Division III All-America status --
David Krombeen, basketball; Joel Rietsema, track & field; and
David Whitake, soccer.
- Voted Hope's outstanding senior student-athletes were Logan
Neil (soccer) and Sarah Sohn (swimming).
- In basketball, men's coach Matt Neil was named the Division III
national coach of the year and women's coach Brian Morehouse was
honored as the Michigan women's coach of the year.
- Attendance at Hope's home athletic events continued to be among
the best in NCAA Division III. The men's and women's basketball
programs topped the more than 400 member schools in average home
attendance while the men's soccer and volleyball teams were each
ranked second.
- Two athletes, Laura Tjepkema (softball) and Chelsea Wiese
(swimming) were voted Academic All-Americans. Wiese was also
presented the NCAA's Elite 89 award for having the best cumulative
grade point average among competitors at the national
championships.
Hope's outdoor athletic facilities continued to improve with the
addition of the Vande Poel-Heeringa Stadium Courts at the Hope
College Tennis Complex. The college also took steps to acquire the
city-owned Holland Municipal Stadium where Hope plays its home
football games. An immediate improvement at the stadium was the
installation of artificial turf in time for the 2012 season.
The college expanded its intercollegiate offerings with an
announcement that men's and women's lacrosse would join the MIAA
and NCAA Division III beginning in 2012-13.
