The second-ranked Hope volleyball team opened the 2013 Midwest Volleyball Challenge by sweeping No. 27 Clarkson (NY.) in three sets on Friday at DeVos Fieldhouse.
The 25-19, 25-17, 25-16 win clinched the Flying Dutch's ninth consecutive 20-win season. They are 20-1 overall heading into tonight's match against sixth-ranked Elmhurst (Ill.) at 8 p.m. on the Main Court.
Clarkson (17-5) is the first of four nationally ranked teams Hope is facing this weekend.
Senior hitter Amy VanderStoep of Holland (West Ottawa HS) led a balanced Hope attack with 12 kills in 17 attempts for a team-high .647 kill percentage. She only had one hitting error.
Junior outside hitter Jenna Grasmeyer of Jenison (Hudsonville Unity Christian HS) chipped in 10 kills for the Flying Dutch, while senior Courtney Earles of Kentwood (East Kentwood HS) added nine.
Sophomore setter Lauren Hazekamp of Fruitport (Fruitport HS) totaled 37 assists and a team-high 13 digs. She shared dig honors with sophomore libero Allie Mitchell of Grand Rapids (Forest Hills Eastern HS).
