The second-ranked Hope volleyball team rallied to edge No. 13 Wittenberg (Ohio) in five sets on Saturday during the second day of the Midwest Volleyball Challenge at DeVos Fieldhouse.
The Flying Dutch (22-1 overall) came back from a 2-1 deficit to win 25-16, 19-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-13. The match was the second this season to go the distance for Hope and in a row. The Flying Dutch won a five-set marathon against No. 6-ranked Elmhurst (Ill.) on Friday night.
Junior outside hitter Jenna Grasmeyer of Jenison (Hudsonville Unity Christian HS) topped Hope with 15 kills.
Junior outside hitter Anna Lynch of Lake Odessa (Lakewood HS) chipped in 12 kills, while senior middle hitter Courtney Earles of Kentwood (East Kentwood HS) and junior outside hitter Amy VanderStoep of Holland (West Ottawa HS) added 11 kills apiece.
Senior middle hitter Mari Schoolmaster of Portage (Portage Central HS) totaled a season-high nine blocks. She came within one of matching the school record blocks in a 25-point set match that Kara VandeGuchte set in four sets against Trine in 2008.
Lynch's three kills led a balanced attack during the fifth set.
Sophomore setter Lauren Hazekamp of Fruitport (Fruitport HS) totaled a season-high 53 assists.
