Lindsey Bieri, Hope Women's Soccer Stuns Kalamazoo With Late OT Goal

Box Score

Lindsey Bieri

Lindsey Bieri scored with one second remaining in overtime to send the Hope women's soccer team to a thrilling 4-3 win against Kalamazoo on Wednesday night.

The Flying Dutch scored twice in the last 10½ minutes of play to rally and remain in a second-place tie in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) standings.

Bieri, a junior from Holland (Holland Christian HS), scored her first goal of the season on a breakaway, beating Kalamazoo goalie Lucy Mailing in low left corner of the goal.

"I could her the announcer's countdown in the background, but just tried to stay calm and finish like it's any other goal," Bieri said. "That was the closest I've ever had last seconds of a game."

Junior Maria DeShaw of Holland (West Ottawa HS) set up Bieri by dropping a pass over a Kalamazoo defender.

"I think she just hears people screaming at her," Hope coach Leigh Sears said of Bieri's ability to be patient with time running out while also remaining accurate and not waiting too long to shoot.  "I know some teams do that, but it's not like basketball, where 'Here's the situation. Here's the score. We've got the ball. We're down two. What do we do?' We just play.

"As a freshman, she wouldn't have been able to do that. Last year, she got some time working one-on-one on keepers and being composed. I think that helped. She's a junior. She's just more mature."

The Flying Dutch tied the score at 3-3 with 2 minutes, 25 seconds remaining in regulation when junior Nora Kirk of Maumee, Ohio (Notre Dame Academy) buried a cross from junior Erin Jipping of Holland (West Ottawa HS).

Kalamazoo briefly held a 3-2 lead after scoring at 82:07. The Hornets had a run of three goals after seniors Courtney Laux of Novi (Novi HS) and Raisa Yewah of East Lansing (Okemos HS) scored in the 43rd and 51st minutes, respectively.

Hope goalie Kat Dickson of Grayslake, Ill. (Grayslake Central HS), earned the win after not yielding a goal in 54 minutes, 59 seconds. She played in the first half and the 10-minute overtime period.

The Flying Dutch improved to 8-1-1 overall and 5-1-1 in MIAA play. They are tied for second with Calvin with 16 points — two behind Alma.
