Box Score One of the top rushing performances in Hope football history was not enough Saturday as the Flying Dutchmen lost its league opener at home to Adrian College 17-14.
Senior running back
Shawn Jackson of Comstock Park (Comstock Park HS) netted 251 yards on 22 carries — the sixth-highest single game in Flying Dutchmen history. Jackson, pictured at right, also scored on touchdown runs of 67 yards and 1 yard.
The Flying Dutchmen fell to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play.
Jackson excelled against a 20th-ranked rush defense in NCAA Division III. Adrian, the reigning MIAA champion, had allowed only 81.3 yards per game and 2.17 yards per rush to four previous opponents. Jackson averaged 11.7 yards per carry.
Hope's school record for rushing yards in a game belongs to Brandon Graham, who had 302 against Kalamazoo in 1996.
Three plays hurt the Flying Dutchmen the most.
Receiver Nathan Hartline got by an otherwise stingy Hope defense twice for long touchdown receptions from quarterback Aaron Tenney. Their first-quarter hookup of 56 yards put Hope down 7-0.
On the Flying Dutchmen's next possession, Adrian blocked Hope's 26-yard field goal attempt.
In the fourth quarter, Hartline hauled in a 49-yard touchdown from Tenney to extend Adrian's lead to 17-7 with 5:17 remaining.
Junior linebacker Cody Lindemulder of Mulliken (Lakewood) led the Hope defense with 14 tackles, including 1 ½ sacks. Senior linebacker Tim Klaus of Saugatuck (Saugatuck HS) had 11 tackles for the Flying Dutchmen.
