The Hope volleyball team made quick work of its first opponent in the NCAA Division III Tournament, beating Webster (Mo.) in three sets on Thursday at the Elmhurst, Ill., Regional hosted by Elmhurst College.
The Flying Dutch won 25-21, 25-15, 25-17 to improve to 30-2 overall and advance to Friday's 4:30 p.m. CST Great Lakes Regional semifinal against Otterbein. No. 16 Otterbein swept No. 25 DePauw 25-21, 25-15, 25-23.
Junior Jenna Grasmeyer of Jenison (Hudsonville Unity Christian HS) topped Hope with 18 kills and a .457 kill percentage. It was her 28th match this season with double-digit kills.
Junior Anna Lynch of Lake Odessa (Lakewood HS) contributed nine kills for the Flying Dutch, while junior outside hitter Amy VanderStoep of Holland (West Ottawa HS) added eight with a .471 kill percentage.
Senior Mari Schoolmaster of Portage (Portage Central HS) added seven kills for Hope. Sophomore setter Lauren Hazekamp of Fruitport (Fruitport HS) collected 34 assists.
Hope limited Webster's 2012 Third Team All-American, middle blocker Sam Kersting to four kills and a minus-.059 kill percentage.
It was Hope's fifth consecutive win in a NCAA Tournament opener and the eighth in 11 appearances.
