No. 2 Hope Volleyball Falls At Home In NCAA Division III Quarterfinals

Box Score

The second-ranked Hope volleyball team suffered a season-ending loss to an opponent not fearful of playing anyone on the road.

No. 19 Wisconsin-Stevens Point continues its memorable run in the NCAA Division III, defeating the Flying Dutch in three sets on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship at DeVos Fieldhouse.

The Pointers followed a regional championship victory vs. 2012 nationa champion St. Thomas (Minn.) by handing its first home loss of the season and just its third defeat in 35 matches this season. It also came in front of a partisan Hope crowd of 3,004.

"I felt Stevens Point played a great match," Hope coach Becky Schmidt said. "They are a very good team. We had a hard time putting them in some difficult positions.

"I am proud of my team and the efforts they made tonight. I'm proud of what this team accomplished all season long. We're disappointed that we didn't come out on top. That's the way it goes. I love these girls. I couldn't be prouder of the things they've done."

Thursday's effort propelled Stevens Point (35-4 overall) to Friday's 7:30 p.m. semifinal against No. 3 California Lutheran.

Sophomore middle blocker and Third Team American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III All-American Emma Brunkhorst put down a match-high 13 kills to lead a balanced Pointer attack.

For Hope, junior outside hitter and First Team All-American Jenna Grasmeyer had a team-high 11 kills.
