Hope-Alma Women's Basketball Preview

 

Today is the 2013-14 home opener for the Hope women's basketball team. Tipoff against Alma is 3 p.m. at DeVos Fieldhouse.

The Flying Dutch are 16-1 in home openers under coach Brian Morehouse, including a 15-game win streak that dates back to 1988-89 season.

Hope is 8-0 in home openers at DeVos Fieldhouse under Morehouse.

The Flying Dutch, who are off to a 6-0 start overall and 2-0 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play, are ranked nationally in two polls — second in USA Today Sports Women's Basketball Coaches Association and sixth by d3hoops.com.

The Scots are winless at 0-6 overall and 0-1 in MIAA action.

This is the 85th meeting between Hope and Alma in women's basketball. Hope trails in the all-time series by a 45-39 margin.

The Flying Dutch have beaten the Scots 28 consecutive times. Alma's last win against Hope ended the Flying Dutch's 1999-2000 season with a 71-59 defeat. The series dates back to 1973.

Today's game features three of the top eight scorers in the MIAA.

Hope's Maura McAfee ranks third at 17.2 points per game, while teammate Rebekah Llorens is eighth at 13.7.

Alma's Mallory Pruett is seventh at 13.8 points per game.
