Look Back At Flying Dutchmen's 2013 Tennis Season

The 2013 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) men's tennis season was drama-filled as the Flying Dutchmen gained a share of the conference championship.

It came to an exciting conclusion when coach Steve Gorno's Flying Dutchmen defeated rival Calvin to force a three-way tie for the crown. Hioe posted a 6-3 victory over the visiting Knights to create the three-way tie. Hope, Calvin and Kalamazoo each went 5-1 in conference dual matches. Overall, the Flying Dutchmen were 16-5 in dual matches.

The championship was the third in Hope men's tennis history albeit shared on each occasion -- 1962 with Kalamazoo, 2003 with Kalamazoo and 2013 with Calvin and Kalamazoo.

Hope went to fall in the semifinals of the four-team MIAA Tournament that determined the league's berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Senior Bobby Cawood of East Lansing (East Lansing HS) was voted the MIAA Most Valuable Player. He was also named to the All-MIAA team for a third consecutive year. Teammates Parker Bussies, a junior from Zeeland (Zeeland West HS) and Jason Muller, a senior from Petoskey (Petoskey HS), were voted  to the All-MIAA second team.

The Flying Dutchmen had standout performances as they hosted the first MIAA flighted tournament. In all, Hope crowned four flight champions and had two runner up finishes in the two doubles and three singles flights.
