Five Facts To Know About Hope Baseball

B.J. Maas, Vic Breithaupt and Stu Fritz are among the names that comprise the rich history of Hope baseball. 

Here are five facts about the Flying Dutchmen.

Number of walkoff grand slam homer runs B.J. Maas hit during the 2002 season. He had two more grand slam homeruns in 2003 en route to a Hope career homer record of 30.

Number of Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) batting titles Vic Breithaupt won in succession between 1989-1991 to make league history. He hit .487 in 1989, .500 in 1990 and .486 in 1991. Breithaupt gained notoriety for his achievement by being included in the Faces of the Crowd feature of "Sports Illustrated" magazine.

Number of MIAA championships the Flying Dutchmen have won, the latest in 2012. Their nine titles under coach Stu Fritz leaves Fritz tied for first all-time amongst MIAA coaches.

Number of runs Hope scored in 2010 against Alma College to set a school record. The Flying Dutchmen defeated Alma 28-2 at Boeve Stadium on April 10, 2010.The Flying Dutchmen scored a school-record 20 runs in the third inning, sending 25 batters to the plate, including three players who batted three times in that inning. Hope had 25 hits in the game. The previous mark was 25 runs in a 25-11 victory over rival Calvin on May 8, 1951. The margin-of-victory was also a school record. The previous mark came in a 22-0 win over Olivet on April 19, 1954.
