A 22-yard shot into the top right corner of the net sank the Hope College men's soccer team in a 2-1 loss to Oberlin (Ohio) Friday in the season opener for both teams.

The first-round finale of the 13th annual Bergsma Memorial Tournament at Van Andel Soccer Stadium started at 8:30 p.m., 1 1/2 hours late, because of a lightning delay.

Slade Gottlieb snapped a 1-1 tie with 5 minutes, 46 seconds remaining in the second half when he ripped a well-placed kick past Hope goalie Will Morlock, a junior from Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS). The goal in front of a crowd of 425 was unassisted.

Hope tied the score at 1-1 at with 8:10 remaining in the first half when senior Grant Neil of Holland (West Ottawa HS) put a rebound of a kick from senior Jason Muller of Petoskey (Petoskey HS) past Oberlin goalie Oidie Kuijpers.

Neil answered 2:26 after Oberlin grabbed a 1-0 lead on John Ingham's header from eight yards out.

At 7 p.m. Saturday, the Flying Dutchmen will play Allegheny (Pa.), a 1-0 winner against Concordia (Mich.) in Friday's opener. The match was halted with nearly 18 minutes remaining because of lightning.

Daniel McCann scored in the seventh minute from six  yards for Allegheny off an assist from Andrew Miller. The Gators received one save from goalie John Lichina.

Oberlin and Concordia square off at 5 p.m. Saturday.
