The Hope and Millikin football teams have different objectives when they take the field today for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff at Ray & Sue Smith Stadium.
Hope is looking to build on last week's season-opening win at North Park (Ill.), while Millikin is aiming to bounce back from a loss to Greenville.
Here is a look at the matchup.
COACHES
Hope — Dean Kreps, 19th Season (95-82)
Millikin —Patrick Etherton, Third Season (9-12)
GAME NOTES
The Hope-Millikin rivalry started in 2010. The Flying Dutchmen are seeking their first win in four tries against their foe from the College Conference of Illinois Wisconsin. Millikin won last season's meeting 49-30 in Decatur, Ill.
The Flying Dutchmen defense will look to slow Millikin running back Sean Dunning. The 6-foot, 215-pound junior has been tough to stop in his two games against Hope. As a sophomore last season, Dunning ran for a game-high 194 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries. In 2011, Dunning ran for 62 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries. Dunning led Millikin in a 48-41 loss to Greenville last week with 137 yards rushing and three touchdowns.
Hope quarterback Michael Atwell is coming off the second 400-yard passing game of his Flying Dutchmen career. The senior from Geneseo, Ill.., threw for 442 yards in last week's 41-21 at North Park (Ill.). Atwell came within three passing yards of matching his career best — set last season in a 63-47 loss at Concordia-Chicago. Atwell is now in fourth place all-time with 4,375 passing yards.
Hope running back Shawn Jackson now sits sixth place all-time in Flying Dutchmen annals for career rushing yards with 2,273. The senior from Comstock Park rushed for a game-high 144 yards on 23 carries against North Park last week. Jackson needs 733 yards to become the Flying Dutchmen's third 3,000-yard career rusher.
In a pregame ceremony at 1:15 p.m., Hope will formally name its football stadium in honor of longtime coach Ray Smith and his wife, Sue, as part of the college's 48th annual Community Day festivities. President Emeritus Jim Bultman will be joined by alumni football players and current team members in recognizing the Smiths. At halftime, Hope and The City of Holland will honor former city manager Soren Wolff's 25-plus years of service to the City of Holland. The Holland City Council has renamed the entrance road into the Hope athletic facilities and Smallenburg Park as Soren Wolff Way.
