The Hope men's tennis team won two matches Friday during the first day of the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region Championships in Kalamazoo.
In the main draw, junior Cody Herbruck of Grand Rapids (Forest Hills Central HS) and junior TJ Brogan of East Lansing (East Lansing HS) won their match 8-6 vs. Wittenberg (Ohio)'s Alexey Topolymanski and Sasha Topolyyansky before losing in the second round to Albion's Eric Guindl and Jonathon Gurnee 8-6.
Junior Jon Panzer of Rockford (Rockford HS) and sophomore Chris Tippett of Flushing (Flint Powers HS) dropped their opening match to Kenyon's Pete Dakich and Nick Fiaschetti 8-2.
In singles play, Herbruck lost to Alan Faber of Kalamazoo 6-3, 6-0, while Panzer fell to Chicago's Deepak Sabadia 6-0, 6-0. Tippett lost to DePauw's Joe Collins 6-3, 6-1, while Brogan fell to Washington (Mo.)'s Jeffrey Hirsh 6-2, 6-1.
In the college draw's singles play, senior Colin McKey of Stevensville (Lakeshore HS) won his first-round match against Ohio Wesleyan's Austin Okray 6-3, 6-3.
Freshman Camden Ludlow of Petoskey (Petoskey HS) dropped his opening match against Washington's Kai Skallerud 6-1, 6-0, while sophomore Henry Peabody of Lapeer (Lapeer East HS) lost to Wabash's Mazin Hakim 6-2, 6-0 and freshman Sam Kreps of Holland (Holland HS) fell to Principia's Daniel Drake 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles, Kreps and Ludlow lost to Ohio Wesleyan's Conor Breen and Dane Poppe 8-5, Jon Hoffman and McKey fell to Augustana's Patrick Lenz and Austin Schoeck 8-3.
