Field-Goal Carom Sends Hope Football To Rare Loss Of Wooden Shoes

Box Score

An unfortunate bounce sent the Hope College football team to a season-ending, 30-29 loss to Kalamazoo on Saturday at Smith Stadium.

Jacob Harby's go-ahead, 22-yard field goal with two seconds remaining caromed straight up in the air off the cross bar before falling over the goalpost.

Kalamazoo went 37 yards in 32 seconds for the game-winning field goal after a 38-yard kickoff return gave the Hornets possession at the Hope 41-yard line.

The defeat took the Wooden Shoes traveling trophy out of the Flying Dutchmen's possession for the first time since 1995. Hope had beaten Kalamazoo 18 consecutive times.

The Flying Dutchmen finished the 2014 season with a 6-4 record, including a fourth-place mark in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association of 3-3. Hope would have been in a second-place tie with a win.

Kalamazoo ended with a 2-8 record, including a 2-4 mark in MIAA action.

The final 1:27 of the game saw the teams combined for 16 points.

Hope fell behind 27-23 with 1:27 left after Alex White scored on a 10-yard touchdown run.

The Flying Dutchmen went 66 yards in three plays to grab a 29-23 lead on a 14-yard touchdown pass to junior Matt Kroll of Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS) from junior quarterback Robert Kish of Grosse Pointe, Michigan (Grosse Pointe South HS).

Kalamazoo blocked the PAT with 41 seconds remaining to trail by only two points.

The two teams combined for 924 yards of total offense. Hope totaled 417 while yielding 507.

Senior kicker Aaron Mick of Clinton Township, Michigan (Sterling Heights Parkway Christian HS), made field goals of 26, 28 and 35 yards. He ended the season with 13 field goals — passing the previous school record of 10.

Mick made six field goals over the past two games.

Kish threw for 297 yards and three touchdowns. He also had a 4-yard touchdown strike to Kroll during the third quarter and a 19-yard one to senior Taylor Bryneart of Washington, Michigan (Romeo HS), during the second quarter.

Brynaert had 114 yards receiving on seven catches.
