Logan Sikkenga's first goal of the season could not have come at a better time for the seventh-ranked Hope College men's soccer team.
The senior from Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville HS), scored on a header 1 minute, 17 seconds into overtime to lift the Flying Dutchmen to a 1-0 win at Trine on Wednesday in Angola, Indiana.
The fifth consecutive win for Hope came in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener for both teams. The Flying Dutchmen improved to 6-1 overall, while dropping Trine to 3-3-1 overall.
Sikkenga broke a scoreless tie on an assist from sophomore Josh Hagene of Caledonia, Michigan (East Kentwood HS). Hagene sent a cross to Sikkenga on a restart following a Trine foul.
Junior Ethan Beswick from Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven HS), recorded his third shutout of the season for Hope. He made two saves.
The Flying Dutchmen return to action on Saturday, Sept. 20, when they host Adrian at Van Andel Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is 7 p.m. for the match that is part of Hope's Purple Games to benefit Van Andel Institute.
