The top-ranked Hope College volleyball team won both of its matches to start the Gallaudet Worthington Classic in Washington, D.C.
The Flying Dutch (13-0 overall) swept both Rowan (New Jersey) and Marymount (Virginia) on Friday.
Hope beat Rowan 25-14, 25-8, 25-16 behind a balanced attack that featured five players with at least five kills.
Senior Jenna Grasmeyer of Jenison, Michigan (Hudsonville Unity Christian HS), collected a match-high nine kills for the Flying Dutch.
Senior Jillian Sommerville of Plymouth, Michigan (Salem HS) totaled eight kills for Hope, while senior Anna Lynch of Lake Odessa, Michigan (Lakewood HS) chipped in seven.
Sophomore Courtney Van Houzen of Traverse City, Michigan (Traverse City West HS) recorded six kills for the Flying Dutch. Junior Lauren Hazekamp of Fruitport, Michigan (Fruitport HS) had five kills to go along with 38 assists.
Hope then defeated Marymount 25-10, 25-16, 25-19 behind a match-high 11 kills from Lynch.
Grasmeyer collected seven kills, while Sommerville had six. Hazekamp totaled 33 assists.
Hope returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 27, with a noon match against Messiah (Pa.), which is 11-4 on the season after beating Marymount in four sets and Rowan in three on Friday.
The Flying Dutch then will play again at either 2 or 4 p.m. depending on the outcome of Saturday's first match.
