Hope Men's Soccer Downs Albion 1-0 For Second Place In MIAA Standings

Corey Stelk's first career goal gave the sixth-ranked Hope College men's soccer team a 1-0 home win against Albion on Saturday.

The senior back from Bettendorf, Iowa (Pleasant Valley HS), scored in the 14th minute to help the Flying Dutchmen claim sole possession of second place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association standings.

Sophomore Josh Hagene of Caledonia, Michigan (East Kentwood HS), assisted on Stelk's goal in front of a Van Andel Soccer Stadium crowd of 928.

Hope improved to 8-2 overall and 3-1 in MIAA play while dropping Albion to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in league matches.

Junior goalie Ethan Beswick of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven HS), recorded his fifth shutout of the season with four saves.

The Flying Dutchmen overcame playing down a man the final 34 minutes, 38 seconds after Hagene received a red card.

Hope returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 1, when the Flying Dutchmen host Olivet in MIAA action. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
