The Hope College volleyball team won two matches Saturday to claim the championship at the eight-team Gallaudet Worthington Classic in Washington, D.C.
The No. 1-ranked Flying Dutch raised their record to 15-0 overall after sweeping Messiah (Pa.) and DeSales (Pa.) on Saturday. Hope went 4-0 during the two-day tournament.
Senior Jenna Grasmeyer of Jenison, Michigan (Hudsonville Unity Christian HS), received Tournament MVP honors. She headlined a seven-player all-tournament team that included teammate Allie Mitchell of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Forest Hills Eastern HS).
The Flying Dutch defeated DeSales 25-11, 25-19, 25-15 in the championship match.
Senior Amy VanderStoep of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS), led Hope with nine kills. The Flying Dutch hit .411 as a team.
Sophomore Anna VandeBunte of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS), chipped in eight kills, while Grasmeyer had seven.
Junior setter Lauren Hazekamp of Fruitport, Michigan (Fruitport HS), collected 38 assists and six kills.
Against Messiah, senior Anna Lynch of Lake Odessa, Michigan (Lakewood HS), recorded a match-high 13 kills. Hope hit .400 as a team.
Grasmeyer added nine kills. Hazekamp totaled 37 assists and five kills.
The Flying Dutch return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 30, when they host Saint Mary's at the DeVos Fieldhouse Volleyball Court. Start time is 7 p.m.
