NCAA Division III Tournament Preview: Hope vs. Wisconsin Lutheran

The Hope College women's basketball team has advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament for the third time in a row and the 11th time in school history.

Tipoff is 7 p.m. Central tonight against Wisconsin Lutheran at Wheaton, Illinois. The winner moves on to sectional play next weekend at a site to be determined to face either St. Thomas, Minnesota or Luther, Iowa.

GAME NOTES

Hope and Wisconsin Lutheran are meeting in the NCAA Tournament for the second season in a row. The Flying Dutch won 60-54 in first-round action at Carthage on March 7, 2014. Hannah Doell's 15 points and Maura McAfee's 13 led Hope past Wisconsin Lutheran last season.

The Flying Dutch own a 7-3 record in second-round games. They lost to host Carthage, Wisconsin 72-67 in 2014 and beat Ohio Northern 63-48 at DeVos Fieldhouse in 2013.

The Flying Dutch lead the all-time series with Wisconsin Lutheran by a 2-0 margin. Hope also edged the Warriors 75-70 in overtime on December 21, 2013, during the Flying Dutch's tournament in Orlando, Florida. Megan Kelley's 25 points led Hope in the victory.

The Flying Dutch are making their 16th NCAA Division III Tournament appearance all-time. Hope has reached the postseason nine times in the past 10 seasons. The Flying Dutch own a 32-13 record in NCAA Tournament games.

Hope defeated Bethel, Minnesota, 75-63 in a first-round game at Wheaton last night. Junior Maura McAfee's 22 points and 11 rebounds led the Flying Dutch. It was her 15th double-double of the season. Senior Rebekah Llorens added 18 points and 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double this season. Sophomore Paris Madison matched her career-high with nine points.

Maura McAfee broke the single-season school record for rebounds against Bethel. She has 298 for this season. She passed previous Amanda Kerkstra, who grabbed 290 during the 2002-03 season.

Two Hope players are nearing the 1,000-point mark for their careers. Rebekah Llorens needs 54 points to achieve the milestone, while  Maura McAfee needs 61. They would join a group of 13 other Flying Dutch players with 1,000 or more points in their careers.

Senior Brittany Berry became Hope's single- season and career leader in 3-pointers made this season. The senior guard has 220 3-pointers over four seasons, including a record-setting 76 this season. She also is tied for third in a single season with 65 in 2012-13 and fifth with 62 in 2013-14.

Maura McAfee's 408 points this season rank among the Flying Dutch's best all-time. She needs four points pass her own career-high and seventh place all-time at Hope. The school record of 518 belongs to Amanda Kerkstra (2002-03).

Hope coach Brian Morehouse is the Flying Dutch's winningest coach. He has a record of 478-75 over 19 seasons — an 86.4 win percentage that ranks among the nation's elite among active coaches. Hope has gone to the NCAA Division III tourney 14 times during Brian Morehouse's tenure. The Flying Dutch have reached the 20-win mark 17 times in a row during his tenure, won a national title in 2006, played in two Final Fours and earned 12 MIAA championships.

All four of Hope's losses this season have come to teams in the NCAA Tournament. The Flying Dutch lost three times to MIAA rival Calvin and once at home to Wheaton, Illinois.

Hope is one of six schools with multiple national titles in women's basketball. The Flying Dutch won in 2006 and 1990. Washington-St. Louis leads with five. Four other schools have two apiece.
