Hope Women's Soccer Sinks Kalamazoo In Early MIAA Showdown

A rain-soaked Hope College women's soccer team was still a happy one at the end Tuesday night at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Three second-half goals propelled the Flying Dutch to a 3-1 win against Kalamazoo in an early Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association showdown.

Hope, the 2014 MIAA champion, topped an opponent picked first in the league's preseason coaches poll. The Flying Dutch were second.

All three goalscorers for Hope (4-0, 1-0 MIAA) netted their first goals of the season.

Sophomore Erin Brophy of West Lafeyette, Indiana (West Lafeyette HS), broke a 1-1 tie in the 72nd minute with a right-footed blast from 25 yards out.

The two teams combined for three goals in an 11-minute span.

Hope grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute on an unassisted goal from junior midfielder Natalie Curry of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grandville Calvin Christian HS).

Kalamazoo evened the score at 1-1 four minutes later on Raechel Schmidt's first goal of the season.

Hope closed the scoring with 10 seconds remaining on a goal from sophomore Allie Wittenbach of Ada, Michigan (Forest Hills Central HS).

Sophomore goalie Mary Clare Theis of East Lansing, Michigan (Haslett HS), earned her fourth win with five saves.

Hope returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 12 when the Flying Dutch host Adrian at Van Andel Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is noon.
