Box Score 2 A furious first-set rally propelled the fifth-ranked Hope College volleyball team past Heidelberg (Ohio) on Friday and to a 2-0 start to the Midwest Invitational.
The Flying Dutch claimed a 26-24, 25-17, 25-21 win in their second match of the day at DeVos Fieldhouse with a rally started by scoring the final six points in the first set.
Hope (18-2 overall) beat Wheaton, Illinois 25-19, 25-15, 25-20 in the tournament opener.
Senior Courtney Van Houzen of Traverse City, Michigan (West HS) fueled the decisive run against Heidelberg with two kills.
Junior Mallory Luke of Saline, Michigan (Saline) served for the final points and chipped in an ace.
Senior Sarah Feldpausch of White Cloud, Michigan (White Cloud) topped all players with 12 kills. Van Houzen finished with 10 against Heidelberg (14-8).
Junior Sophia Hackett of Indianapolis, Indiana (Brebeuf Jesuit) totaled 37 assists, seven digs and four kills.
Senior Alexis Thompson of Monroe, Michigan (St. Mary Catholic Central) recorded 27 digs.
Against Wheaton (7-13), Van Houzen led a balanced Hope attack with seven kills. Feldpausch and sophomore Katie Rietberg of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa) added five kills.
Hackett collected 22 assists and a team-high 23 digs.
Hope concludes the Midwest Invitational with two matches on Saturday, Oct. 15: 11 a.m. vs. No. 17 Elmhurst, Illinois and 2 p.m. vs. Clarkson, New York.
