Box Score
Erin Brophy's first multi-goal game for the Hope College women's soccer team sparked the Flying Dutch to a 4-1 win against Olivet on Purple Community day at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
The junior from West Lafayette, Indiana (West Lafayette) scored twice in the first half on Wednesday to propel Hope to a 3-0 halftime lead. She now has a career-high six goals this season — passing her five from last season.
The Flying Dutch (10-3-2 overall) moved within one game of Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association-leader Kalamazoo. There are three regular-season games remaining. Hope is 9-2-2 in league play, while Kalamazoo is 10-1-2.
Purple Community day was a doubleheader with men's soccer to support Van Andel Institute's biomedical research and science education. Part of the proceeds fund Hope students' internships at Van Andel Institute.
Brophy opened the scoring 14 minutes, 24 seconds into the match off the fourth assist of the season for senior Elizabeth Perkins of Eaton Rapids, Michigan (Lansing Christian).
Perkins then headed in her 18th goal of the season 15 ½ minutes later off the third assist of the season from senior Rachel deMarigny of Park Ridge, Illinois (Maine Township South).
Perkins moved into a tie for third-place among the Flying Dutch's single-season goal leaders with Gretchen Schoon (1998). She is one goal from matching the school record shared by Melody Morscheck (1997) and Tracy Phelps (1996).
Brophy upped Hope's lead to 3-0 five minutes later against Olivet (8-6-1, 6-5-1 MIAA).
Senior Natalie Curry of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grandville Calvin Christian) tacked on her third goal of the season five minutes into the second half.
Hope returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 22 with a noon match at Alma.
