Women's Soccer Downs Calvin, Advance To Host MIAA Tournament Final

Box Score

Kendall Dice and the Hope College women's soccer team wanted no part of another dramatic match against rival Calvin.

The Flying Dutch cruised into the championship match of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament by defeating visiting Calvin 4-0 Thursday night.

Three first-half goals propelled second-seeded Hope (14-3-2 overall) into a chance to play for the MIAA's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Kickoff for the MIAA co-champions is noon Saturday against fourth-seeded Alma at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

"It's super awesome. It's been our goal since the beginning," said Dice, a senior from Allendale, Michigan (Unity Christian HS). "We set out that this is where we wanted to be at this time. It's been cool to see to accomplish those goals. We have an awesome bunch this year. We all get along super well. The longer we can stick around together, the happier we all are."

Dice, pictured, got the Flying Dutch on the board 19 minutes into the match with her second goal of the season.

Hope struck again just 2:02 later when senior Elizabeth Perkins of Eaton Rapids, Michigan (Lansing Christian HS) recorded her school-record 23rd goal of the season. She entered the day tied for fifth in the nation in goal scoring.

The Flying Dutch extended their lead to 3-0 just 70 seconds before halftime on Erin Brophy's career-high ninth goal of the season. The junior from West Lafayette, Indiana (West Lafayette) was assisted by freshman Megan Bigelow of Flushing, Michigan (Flushing).

Sophomore Grace Bubin of Rockford, Michigan (Rockford) chipped in her second goal of the season midway through the second half.

Junior goalie Mary Clare Theis of East Lansing, Michigan (Haslett) needed to make only one save for her fifth shutout of the season.

Alma (9-5-5) advanced on penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie at top-seeded Kalamazoo on Wednesday. This is the Scots' first championship match appearance since 2011, when they edged Adrian 1-0.

The Flying Dutch have reached the MIAA finals for the fifth consecutive season and sixth overall.

Hope went 1-0-1 against Alma this season. The two teams tied 1-1 at Van Andel Soccer Stadium on September 20. The Flying Dutch won 4-1 at Alma on October 22.
