Women's Soccer Rallies Past Alma For MIAA Tournament Trophy, NCAA Berth

Box Score

Erin Brophy and Elizabeth Perkins teamed up twice for second-half goals that made the Hope College women's soccer team Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament champions.

The second-seeded Flying Dutch topped fourth-seeded Alma 4-2 on a sunny Saturday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium to earn the MIAA's automatic berth to next week's NCAA Division III Tournament.

Hope (15-3-2 overall) will learn its postseason assignment on Monday at 1:30 p.m. at ncaa.com/liveschedule.

"This was the goal," said Hope coach Leigh Sears, whose team also earned a share of the regular-season league championship. "I'm happy."

Brophy and Perkins delivered the second-half offense the Flying Dutch to snap a 2-2 halftime lead.

Perkins, the senior from Eaton Rapids, Michigan (Lansing Christian HS), set a long pass ahead to a streaking Brophy on the right side of the field. The junior from West Lafayette, Indiana (West Lafayette) dribbled a few feet before burying her 10th goal of the season into the left corner of the goal 19 minutes, 47 seconds into the second half.

Brophy returned the favor 7 ½ minutes later with a corner kick that Perkins headed in for her second goal of the game and school-record 25th of the season. Perkins entered the match ranked third in Division III in goals scored.

"Brophy and Perkins, they're special," Sears said.

In the first half, Hope answered Alma goals twice to even the score. The Scots grabbed a 1-0 just 2:05 into the math.

Perkins scored off an assist from senior Kendall Dice of Allendale, Michigan (Unity Christian HS) 22:23 into the first half.

Alma (9-6-5) went back ahead five minutes later, but senior Natalie Curry of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grandville Calvin Christian) buried her sixth goal of the season 2 ½ minutes later.

This will be Hope's fifth NCAA Tournament appearance and second in three years. The Flying Dutch previously appeared in 2014, 2005, 2004 and 2003.
