Football Stuffs Albion Late, Completes Swift Turnaround In MIAA Play

Box Score

Linebacker Aaron O'Meara, defensive back Mason Rosado and a host of Hope College tacklers stuffed Albion on fourth down in the final minute of the game to secure a 16-13 victory for the Flying Dutchmen on Saturday.

The decisive play on 4th-and-2 at the Hope 29-yard line saw the Flying Dutchmen bring down Albion running back Doug Freeman.

Hope (6-3 overall) clinched at least sole possession of second place in the MIAA standings with a 5-1 league record. The Flying Dutchmen rebounded after going winless in MIAA play last season.

Hope pushed its win streak to five games by overcoming a second-half comeback that had Albion (1-8, 0-5 MIAA) scored all 13 of its points.

The Flying Dutchmen built a 13-0 halftime lead behind a 54-yard touchdown run from junior running back Brandan Campbell of Otsego, Michigan (Otsego HS) and field goals of 24 and 46 yards from junior kicker Darren Ford of Howell, Michigan (Howell).

Ford added another 46-yard field goal in the third quarter to extend the Flying Dutchmen's lead to 16-0.

The 46-yard field goals are longest in Hope College history. He passed the previous best of 44 shared by JD Graves (1998 vs. Albion) and Travis Williams (1996 vs. Valparaiso).

Ford now has 13 field goals on the season — matching the school record belonging to Aaron Mick (2014).

Ford finished with 11 field goals in MIAA play this season — tying the league record set by Travis Braun of Kalamazoo in 2010.

Campbell rushed for a game-high 162 yards on 24 carries. He now has 1,194 rushing yards on the season — sixth-most in Hope College history.

Campbell's 12th rushing touchdown ties him for seventh place in Flying Dutchmen history with Shawn Jackson (2013) and David Booko (2007).

The Flying Dutchmen can earn a share of the league title if Trine beats MIAA-leader Olivet next week. Olivet has secured the MIAA"s automatic berth to the NCAA Division III playoffs with one league game remaining because the Comets own the head-to-head tiebreaker over Hope.

The Flying Dutchmen wrap up the 2016 season on Saturday, Nov. 12 with a 1 p.m. Senior Day game against Concordia, Wisconsin at Ray & Sue Smith Stadium.
