Freshmen Mark VanderStoep of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS) and Christian Rhoades of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS) accomplished something no other Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association team had done against Kalamazoo this season.

The two beat the Hornets in a flight, winning No. 2 doubles during a 5-1 MIAA Tournament title match loss on Friday at Kalamazoo.

Kalamazoo had gone the previous eight matches against league opponents, including Thursday's semifinals, without losing a match.

VanderStoep and Rhoades won 9-7 against Robert Hudson and Eric De Witt.

Hope finished the season with an 8-12 record. The Flying Dutchmen were runner-up in the MIAA regular-season standings and league tournament in Adam Ford's first season as head coach.

Kalamazoo advances to the NCAA Division III Championship.
