NFL Record-Setting Kicker Jason Hanson Visits Football Practice At Smith Stadium

Record-setting NFL kicker and Detroit Lions legend Jason Hanson visited Hope College football practice on Tuesday to offer tips and advice to Flying Dutchmen players.

Hanson spoke to the entire team in the morning at the invitation of head coach Peter Stuursma, then worked with Hope's kickers and special teams coordinator Michael Lapciuk during an afternoon practice at Ray & Sue Smith Stadium.

"I'm not going to change their live in a couple of hours but just a few tips as they start to really prepare for the season, some things to think about that they'll have to go practice on their own and perfect," Hanson told the Holland Sentinel.

Hanson kicked 495 field goals over a 20-season NFL career after being drafted by the Lions. He retired in 2013 with six NFL records to his name.

Hanson joined former teammate Tony Semple on the sidelines for Hope's practice. Semple, who played eight seasons as an offensive guard for the Lions, is Hope's offensive line coach.

"It's easy. It's fun. I'm glad to do it," Hanson told WXMI FOX 17.

Stuursma reached out to Hanson after speaking with men's soccer coach Steven Smith. Jason's son, Ryan, played soccer for the Flying Dutchmen for two seasons before hanging up his cleats this summer.

Stuursma told WOOD-TV 8 it is great because his players get to hear from such a successful pro (and) " … what it takes to get to that next level. And not just that the guys are inspired to do that, but what it takes to get to the next level in all the things that they do."

Hanson also shared with Hope players about his Christian faith and the positive impact a relationship with God can have on their lives.

"To help them see there is something bigger than their performance. I know in football time, in practice time, you better go perform, yet the bigger picture God created you not to be a superstar ... but to have a relationship with him," Hanson told WHTC-AM 1450.
