Rachel deMarigny, Women's Soccer Top Albion, Keep Share Of MIAA Lead

Box Score

Rachel deMarigny took her turn to have a starring role for the Hope College women's soccer night Thursday night.

The senior defender from Park Ridge, Illinois (Maine Township South HS) played a part in the Flying Dutch's first two goals of a 3-1 win against Albion at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Hope (4-1-1 overall) remained tied atop the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association standings with Kalamazoo. Both teams have 3-0-1 league records after Kalamazoo beat Calvin in overtime Thursday.

The Flying Dutch struck first against Albion when deMarigny, pictured, set up off a corner kick junior forward Erin Brophy of West Lafayette, Indiana (West Lafayette) for a goal 21 minutes, 48 seconds into the first half. It was Brophy's second goal of the season and deMarigny's first assist.

The lead grew 15 minutes later when deMarigny recorded her first goal of the season off a free kick just outside the penalty area.

Albion (2-3-1, 1-3 MIAA) pulled within a goal 17:13 into the second half.

Senior Elizabeth Perkins of Eaton Rapids, Michigan (Lansing Christian) scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season with 4:30 remaining. Junior Allie Wittenbach of Ada, Michigan (Forest Hills Central) picked up her team-leading third assist.

Perkins moved into a tie for 11th place on Hope's all-time goalscoring list with her 20th career goal. She joins Liz Dornbos (1998-2001), Lindsey Bieri (2011-14) and Raisa Yewah (2010-13).

Perkins needs two more goals to join the Top 10.

Hope returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 17 with a noon match at Olivet.
