The Hope College men's soccer team pushed No. 18-ranked Ohio Wesleyan to the limit on opposing turf Friday night before dropping the season-opening match 2-1 in double overtime.
Sophomore Devon Butler of New Baltimore (Anchor Bay HS) helped send the match to overtime by scoring with 23 minutes, 1 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score at 1-1. Butler is pictured.
Sophomore Josh Hagene of Caledonia, Michigan (East Kentwood) recorded the assist.
The two teams played nearly 11 ½ minutes of overtime and 102 minutes overall. Antonio Romanelli netted the winning goal 1:24 into the second overtime session.
Freshman goalie Blair McCormick of Wadsworth, Illinois (Warren Township) made seven saves for the Flying Dutchmen.
Hope returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 3 with a 4:30 p.m. Eastern match against Capital, Ohio at Ohio Wesleyan.
