Football Hosts Olivet For MIAA Opener, Youth Night And Poster Giveaway

The Hope College football team kicks off Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play this Saturday at 6 p.m. at Ray & Sue Smith Stadium against Olivet College.

This is the 74th time Hope and Olivet have met in football. The Flying Dutchmen lead the all-time series 54-18-1. Hope lost at Olivet last season 31-27.

At halftime, Hope College will dedicate the Smith Stadium Press Box in honor of Tom '67 and Carole DeYoung '67 Renner. Tom served Hope College for 47 years before retiring in 2013. He was associate vice president for public and community relations, and his work included publicity and photography on the college's varsity athletic teams. He also was MIAA publicist and statistician for the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association from 1967-2008.

Hope College is pleased to have as our guest today, Army Infantry Combat Specialist Jeremy VanderVeen of Grand Rapids. After completing basic training in Fort Benning, he entered Army Ranger Training School. The 2001 Grandville High School graduate passed further Ranger training to serve in combat. He was a member of the 125th Infantry Regiment and spent one year serving on missions in Iraq. He and his wife, Leah, have two daughters, Ava and Kate, and are expecting a third child.

Join us every Monday this fall for the Hope College H-Club Coaches Luncheons at Maas Auditorium. This week's one-hour program featuring football coach Peter Stuursma and women's soccer coach Leigh Sears begins at noon. Cost is $10 and includes a buffet lunch.
