Football Drops Community Day Opener, Peter Stuursma Debut To Monmouth

Monmouth played spoiler for the Hope College football team on the 51st Community Day and the debut of head coach Peter Stuursma on Saturday, winning 44-3 at Ray & Sue Smith Stadium.

The Scots reeled off 34 unanswered points in the season opener after junior Darren Ford of Howell, Michigan (Howell HS) kicked a 34-yard field goal 3 minutes, 21 seconds into the second quarter.

Community Day, an annual celebration of the college's relationship with the City of Holland, drew a crowd of 3,095.

Junior running back Brandan Campbell of Otsego, Michigan (Otsego) recorded a team-high 50 yards rushing for the Flying Dutchmen on 12 carries.

Monmouth outgained Hope by a 587-156 margin in yards.

The Scots answered Ford's field goal with a 99-yard touchdown drive after they nearly downed the kickoff in the end zone for a safety.

Hope returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 10 with a 1 p.m. nonleague game at Defiance, Ohio.
