Women's Soccer Opens MIAA Play With 1-1 Draw At Kalamazoo

Elizabeth Perkins continued her goalscoring ways for the Hope College women's soccer team, but the Flying Dutch played to a 1-1 draw at Kalamazoo on Tuesday to kick off Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play.

The league opener featured the top two teams in the MIAA preseason coaches poll.

Perkins scored her fourth goal in three matches this season to give Hope a 1-0 lead 6 ½ minutes into the first half. The senior from Eaton Rapids, Michigan (Lansing Christian HS) is pictured at right.

Junior Allie Wittenbach of Ada, Michigan (Forest Hills Central) set up the goal with her third assist of the season.

The lead stood until Kalamazoo netted an equalizer with 5:38 remaining in regulation.

The two teams then played two 10-minute overtime sessions before settling for a tie.

Hope is now 1-1-1 on the season and 0-0-1 in MIAA matches. Kalamazoo is 1-1-2 overall and 0-0-1 in league play.

The Flying Dutch return to action on Saturday, Sept. 10 with a noon match at Adrian.
