Men's Soccer Plays No. 1 Calvin To 1-1 Draw

Box Score

The Hope College men's soccer team gave the top-ranked team in NCAA Division III a challenge like few others have this season.

The Flying Dutchmen played unbeaten Calvin College to a 1-1 draw Wednesday night at Van Andel Soccer Stadium. Ninety minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime could not decide a winner.

Junior James Reymann of Columbus, Ohio (Worthington Kilbourne HS) scored his second goal of the season for the Flying Dutchmen midway through the second half to tie the score.

Junior goalie Blair McCormick of Wadsworth, Illinois (Warren Township) collected seven saves for Hope.

The Flying Dutchmen overcame an own goal 4 ½ minutes into the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association match to pick up a valuable point in the league standings.

Hope (5-5-2 overall) is in sole possession of third place in the MIAA standings with a 4-2-2 league record. The Flying Dutchmen trail second-place Adrian by three points while having played one fewer game.

Hope held Calvin (12-0-1, 8-0-1 MIAA) to its lowest goal total of the season.

The Knights entered the match averaging 3.92 goals per game — fourth-highest in the nation.

"Not the result we wanted, but the effort and the game plan we were very pleased with," head coach Steven Smith said. "The boys bought into the game plan and they gave great effort. When those two things come together, good things can happen.

"My compliments to them as well. You can see why they're the No. 1 team in the country. They come at you relentlessly. It makes a fun rivalry match."
