Women's Soccer Beats Saint Mary's, Clinches Outright MIAA Championship

Box Score

The Hope College women's soccer team relied on a familiar, reliable formula to earn a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association-title clinching victory on Saturday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Four different goalscorers powered the nationally ranked Flying Dutch to a 5-0 victory against Saint Mary's College.

The victory gave Hope an outright MIAA championship — its sixth league title overall and second in as many seasons.

The Flying Dutch improved to 14-1-1 overall and 12-1-1 in MIAA matches as they clinched the top seed in next month's league tournament. There are two MIAA games and one nonleague one remaining in the regular season. Hope will host a MIAA Tournament semifinal on Thursday, November 2.

Junior Grace Bubin of Rockford, Michigan (Rockford HS) opened a four-goal first half for the Flying Dutch with her 10th goal of the season. It is the 19th time a Hope player has netted double-digit goals in a single season.

Goals then came before halftime from sophomore Megan Bigelow of Flushing, Michigan (Flushing) from senior Erin Brophy of West Lafayette, Indiana (West Lafayette), junior Rylie Dalton of Rockford, Michigan (Rockford) from Brophy, and senior Allie Wittenbach of Ada, Michigan (Forest Hills Central) from junior Hilary Curry of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Calvin Christian).

Bigelow added her second goal of the game and of the season in the second half.

Three goalies combined on Hope's 13th shutout of the season and 12th in MIAA play. Freshman Jordanne Ellingboe of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven) made one save in the first half to claim on the first. Sophomore Caroline Serkaian of Okemos, Michigan (Okemos) and junior Shelby Bowers of Coldwater, Michigan (Coldwater) did not face a shot during the second half.

This season, the Flying Dutch are outscoring opponents by a 55-4 margin and MIAA foes by a 42-2 margin.
